Back in action
The blizzard hit Sunday night into Monday. We lost power in the morning, didn’t get it back until we were going to bed that night. It took the city plows a few more days to clear enough streets for our daycare to open again, so it was me, my wife, our daughter and our dog, all cuddled in the house for three days.
I didn’t work. The first day, I couldn’t, we had no power, no way to have all those video calls, just layering up in sweatpants and sweaters and hats and blankets, playing with our daughter on the couch, staying warm. The second day, we had the power back, but Natalie was still home, daycare was closed, so I just decided to take that day off too. It was easier than switching in and out from dad to therapist mode, and the house was a wreck, and this way my wife could get some work done. Plus we had the dog to walk and the driveway to shovel, all of which take a lot of time and energy.
The third day, I had a cold. I didn’t work. My wife worked. I played with Natalie, fed her, put her down for naps, took naps myself, nursed a headache until my wife ended her work day and took over the childcare duties for the evening, feeding Natalie some broccoli that she didn’t like, giving her a bath, putting her to bed. I took three Advil, drank some of the leftover hot toddy my wife had made for a mobile sauna birthday hang from the weekend, and watched the first two episodes of *Homeland. *An intense show, but the Advil and drink and not being in dad mode had me feeling a lot better.
Thursday, the fourth day, and we’re back in action. Daycare is open, so my wife and I dropped her off, then went to a coffee shop. I caught up on work emails; there weren’t that many. I tinkered with this website; what else is new. Finally, got around to writing, always a good sign.
